Meeting 11 January 2020

Introduction

This, the 105th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Summary of the AGM

The Society's seventh AGM was held during this meeting.

2019 was a prosperous and successful year. We held our Guqin summer school at the China Exchange in London's Chinatown, taught by Dr Cheng Yu and Gu Yunpei, with sessions on the xiao taught by Dennis Lee, and calligraphy taught by Hu Ruijun. There were also classes for the pipa (taught by Cai Yina), erhu (taught by Chen Dacan), and dizi and hulusi (taught by Liu Menglin) at the Foguang Shan Temple, and guzheng (taught by Fungying Wong) at China Arts Now. The summer school included a concert performed by Dr Cheng Yu and the summer school teachers, and members of LYQS. In addition, three 10-week courses were held though the year at the Foguang Shan Temple. LYQS members performed at two special concerts: the "Sound of China concert" at Queen Mary University and at the launch of the Bulgarian translation of 红楼梦 Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansions) at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute,as well as a number of other performances. The society has bought two new books for the library. Membership has grown substantially since last year.

The Society decided to re-introduce fees for non-members to attend yajis as of March 2020. The fee will be £5 and can be paid either in advance via Eventbrite (plus Eventbrite's fee) or at the door. This will contribute to room hire and other running costs for our events. If a person who has paid the fee decides to join the society on the same day, the fee will be deducted from the cost of their subscription.

The 3-year term of office for all Committee members expired at this AGM. All were re-elected.
