Chinese Music Summer School 2019
Introduction
Betwen 27 August and 1 September 2019, the London Youlan Qin Society and the UK Chinese Esemble held 5-day courses on the following Chinese musical instruments:
- guqin at the China Exchange in Chinatown, London, taught by Gu Yunpei (beginners) and Cheng Yu
- guzheng at China Arts Now on Regent Street, taught by Fungying Wong.
- pipa, taught by Cai Yina; erhu, taught by Chen Dacan; dizi and hulusi taught by Liu Menglin, all at the Foguang Shan Temple on St. Margarets Street
Classes
For each instrument, two classes were held, one for people will little or no previous experience, and one for people who already had some experience of playing it. The beginners were were led through the basic fingering techniques, building a foundation on which they would be able to progress. By the end of the 5 days, they were able to play a simple piece. On the last afternoon, informal student performances were held, to enable participants to show each other what they had learned. For thise doing the guqin, optional classes on callgraphy, taught by Hu Ruijun, and the xiao flute, taught by Dennis Lee, were held in the afternoons.
Concert
On the afternoon of Friday 30th a concert was held. It was performed by musicians from the UK Chinese Ensemble and members of the London Youlan Qin Society. For details and photo gallery see Chinese Music Concert.
