Meeting 8 January 2022



Introduction

This, the 116th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held online using Zoom. It was the 11th time our society has held a yaji meeting online, and it enabled qin friends around the world to join our meeting.

The meeting began at 1 pm UK time and ended at approximately 4:00 pm. Cheng Yu introduced the yaji and welcomed everybody.

Summary of AGM

Despite the continuing pandemic, LYQS has had an active and fruitful year. We held 6 online yaji meetings, some of them with a specific theme. Our New Year yaji was attended by a diplomat from the Chinese Embassy, and China Central Television featured our Chinese New Year yaji in one of their programmes, which was shown both within and outside China. Qin master Professor Li Fengyun and flute master Wang Jiangxin played for our May yaji. The September yaji focussed on the qin legacy of Robert van Gulik. The summer school was online again, and was successful. Even when we return to in-person events, we will continue to hold some yajis online, so that people around the world can join.

There were some in-person events, including a small number concerts, which were all well attended and well received.. A performance by LYQS and UKCE musicians by the River Thames in September was filmed by Phoenix TV, and was also shown both inside and outside China. Also in September, Cheng Yu's CD Longyin: The Dragon Chants, featuring a qin once owned by Robert van Gulik and sinologist Dr Laurence Picken, was published.

Viola Qiu joined the LYQS Committee. She has handled the technical side of all our online activities and filmed some of the concerts.

Membership has once again increased slighly, and the society's finances remain healthy.

We are increasing our social media activity, and hope that our members and friends will engage with us on FaceBook, Instagram and WeChat.
