Meeting 11 September 2021



Introduction

This, the 114th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held online using Zoom. It was the ninth time our society has held a yaji meeting online, and it enabled qin friends around the world to join our meeting. This yaji was on the theme of "Robert van Gulik and the Guqin". Robert van Gulik was a well-known Dutch sinologist, diplomat, guqin musician and writer in the 20th century.

Footage from our yaji video recording will be selected and broadcast by the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV this autumn. CCTV-4’s forthcoming production "Mutual Learning between Chinese and Foreign Civilizations" will feature a special episode on "Guqin and Piano". The program will cover the history of the guqin overseas and its current development. With our nearly two decades of promoting guqin music outside China, LYQS has a track record of hosting more than 100 guqin yaji gatherings, some of them online, a series of guqin workshops and an international guqin music festival. Thus it has been greatly appreciated and welcomed by overseas Chinese and Western musicians alike. We are pleased that highlights of our September yaji will be featured and broadcast on CCTV-4 this autumn.

The meeting began at 1 pm UK time and ended at approximately 4 pm. Cheng Yu introduced the yaji and welcomed everybody.
