Meeting 9 May 2020

Introduction

Because of the lockdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this, the 106th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held online, using Zoom. It was the first time our society has held a yaji online, and it enabled many qin friends around the world to join our meeting, from China, the USA, Germany, Slovakia, Denmark, Ireland and Canada as well as the UK. We had a total of 55 attendees.

We were delighted to welcome master guqin maker and player Professor Zeng Chengwei in Chengdu. He played 秋水 Qiu Shui for us.

The meeting began at 12:30 pm UK time and ended at 3:40. Cheng Yu introduced the yaji and welcomed everybody. Members of LYQS then gave a group performance of Yangguan San Die. Because of the delays caused by the network, instead of everybody playing together, they took turns to play short sections. After that Professor Zeng Chengwei played Qiu Shui, a piece familiar to people in the UK who had been taught by him during his visits to London over the years. Then followed performances by about half of the attendees. Highlights included Professor Zeng's Qiu Shui, Oulu Wang Ji plyed by Peiyou Chang and Nao Hai (Disturbing the Sea), a piece composed and played by Jacob Alford Garcia, inspired by the story "Nezha Conquers the Dragon King".

The yaji was very successful and we hope to hold further online yaji meetings.
