Meeting 11 May, 2013



Introduction

This, the 64th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Music

The following music was played:

  1. Puan Zhou 普庵咒 (The Mantra of Puan) played by Chak Hum
  2. Yangguan San Die 阳关三叠 (Three Variations on the Yang Pass), played by Zou Yuan
  3. Qiu Feng Ci 秋風词 (Ode to the Autumn Wind), played by Chen Qiuzhi
  4. Wo Long Yin 臥龍吟 (Sleeping Dragon), played by Liu Bo
  5. Pei Lan 佩兰 (Admiring the Orchid), played by Julian Joseph
  6. Guanshan Yue 关山月 (Moon over the Mountain Pass), (qin/xiao duet), Ashley Guan(qin) and Dennis Lee (xiao)
  7. Jiu Kuang 酒狂 (The Drunkard), played by Charles Tsua
  8. Meihua San Nong 梅花三弄 (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom), played by Ashley Guan
  9. Ping Sha Luo Yan 平沙落雁 (Wild Geese Descending on the Level Sand), played by Cheng Yu (qin), Dennis Lee (xiao)
  10. Xi Jiang Yue 西江月 (Moon over the Western River), sung by Marnix Wells. Marnix gave a detailed explanation of the structure and rhythm of this piece. The music is based on a 9th century score of the same name from Dunhuang. The lyrics are a ci poem, similar in structure to regulated verse, but the 1st, 2nd and 4th lines of each quatrain have 6 characters/beats, and the 3rd line has 7 characters.
