Meeting 14 January, 2012

Introduction

This, the 56th meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

Many members renewed their annual subscriptions, which became due on 1st January.

Much of the rest of the meeting was used to rehearse for the performance at the Chinese New Year celebrations at Trafalgar Square. There was therefore little time for people to play. However we were delighted to welcome Luca Bonvini, an accomplished jazz performer and qin player from Paris.

The LYQS was delighted to welcome new member Zou Yuan, who joined during this meeting.

Summary of the AGM

The second AGM of the Sociey was held during this meeting, during which Ashley Guan was elected to the Committee.

2011 was a fruitful year in which the LYQS was formalised and membership was established with a good support base. The Society had generous funding and the Society developed parternerships with the Prince's Charities Foundation (our main sponsor), the British Museum (BM) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Our project the Chinese Four Arts Summer School was very successful, with an excellent concert featuring China's most distinguished guqin master Professor Li Xiangting collaborating with the string quartet from The English Chamber Orchestra. We held regular meetings at SOAS, and one in conjunction with the Chime Conference at Royal Holloway College. The Society also initiated a Society library, with the purchase of a complete 30 volume set of Qinqu Jicheng 琴曲集成, which was published in 2010.

Associate Membership was introduced for people, such as those overseas, who are unable to benefit fully from membership but who still wish to be involved with and support the Society.

Music

The following music was played:

  1. Xiao Xiang Shui Yun 潇湘水云 (Mist and Cloud over the Xiao and Xiang Rivers), played by Luca Bonvini

Approximately two hours were spent practising for our group performance of Guan Shan Yue and Jiu Kuang in Trafalgar Square on 29th of January.

The London Youlan Qin Society would like to thank the Department of Music at SOAS for allowing us to hold our meeting there, and Seán Kelly for taking the photographs.
