This, the 34th
meetingof theLondon Youlan Qin
Society, was held at the home of Julian Joseph in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
Introduction
This yaji, as
always, was very informal. After
an excellent lunch, all players played several pieces. We were
pleased to welcome Fred Wong and his wife, and Robin Thompson, who
playes the Japanese sanshin,
a 3-stringed lute similar to the Chinese sanxian and the Japanese shamisen.
Robin told us that the classical sanshin
music had a similar position in ancient Ryukyuan culture to that
of the qin in China. It was
the instrument of the aristocracy, and large ensembles performed during
the investiture ceremonies for new Ryukyuan kings, when Chinese envoys
came from Beijing. These performances could last up to 6 months.
