23rd September 2006

This, the 22nd meeting of the London Youlan Qin Society, was held at the home of Julian Joseph in Chippenham, Wiltshire, where a smaller than usual group gathered.

Programme

After a very fine lunch, the following music was played:
  1. Chun Feng 春风 (Spring Breeze), played by Charlie Huang. Learned from Gong Yi's book.
  2. Ping Sha Luo Yan 平沙落雁 (Wild Geese Descending on the Sandbank) played by Cheng Yu. This was the Guang Pinghu version as learned from Li Xiangting.
  3. Guan Shan Yue 关山月 (Moon Over the Mountain pass) played by Chen Jinwei.
  4. Changmen Yuan 长门怨 (Lament at the Changmen Palace), played by Chen Jinwei.
  5. Shen Ren Chang 神人畅 (Joy of Gods and Men), played by Christopher Evans.
  6. Zui Weng Yin played and sung by Marnix Wells. From the Ming Dynasty qin handbook Fengxuan Xuanpin, with lyrics by the Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo. It is unique in that there is a Northern Song Dynasty text containing detailed information on how to play the rhythm.
  7. Guangling San Xin Pu 广陵散新谱 (New Score for Guangling San), played by Julian Joseph. This is Zhang Ruishan's score in Shiyi Xian Guan Qinpu. It was preceeded by a modal prelude (diaoyi 调意) from the "original" version in Guyin Zheng Zong 古音正宗 (1593), entitled Guangling San Zhen Qu 广陵散真趣.
  8. Meihua San Nong 梅花三弄 (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom), played by Chen Jinwei.
  9. Liu Shui 流水 (Flowing Water), played by Cheng Yu. This was the Guang Pinghu version as learned from Li Xiangting.
